Keeping Up Your Curb Appeal Through the Chicago Winter

You may be considering selling your home, or you may just want to maintain your home’s appearance through the colder months. Whatever the reason, keeping up your home’s curb appeal during the winter in Chicago can be challenging. The shorter days, grey skies, and accumulated (and melted) snow can all contribute to making the exterior of your home and property look dull and worn. Here are a few ideas to keep in mind if you want to keep up your home’s curb appeal this winter:

Clear the Pathways

Making sure your driveway and sidewalks remain clear of snow and ice is important for safety reasons, but it also maintains your home’s attractiveness during the colder months. Think about inspecting the pathways for cracks to repair, and apply some sealant to protect against water from soaking in.

Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting can really give your home’s exterior an aesthetic boost. And adding new lighting options will also improve the security of your home, while making it look cozier and more inviting. Consider adding some string lights for accent or some lanterns instead of the bright, antiseptic flood lights if you want to amplify your home’s warmth.

Brighten with Color

Painting your front door with a bold color will brighten the whole façade of your home. Go with as bold a color as you’d like, just make sure it complements the other colors on the exterior of your home. You can do something similar with your shutters, and mailbox — and you can also add new house numbers and a new door mat for an immediate design lift.

Keep Up with Maintenance

It’s difficult to maintain motivation throughout the winter for some of us, but it’s important to maintain upkeep on your home. Check your gutters and ensure they’re free from debris and draining properly. Replace any compromised wood on your porch or windowsills. And assess the trees on your property to see if there are any branches in need of trimming, then get rid of any that might buckle under the weight of accumulated snow or any that could cause damage in a storm.

The Chicago winter may often be dark and grey, but your home needn’t reflect that. These ideas will dress up your home’s exterior and keep it looking beautiful and inviting all winter long.
